Apollo Hospitals Greams Lane has introduced Tamil Nadu’s first Centre of Excellence for Parkinson’s Disease and Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS), expanding access to advanced neurosurgical care for patients across India and South Asia. The centre brings together specialised clinical expertise, precision-led DBS surgery, and an integrated care model designed to improve mobility, independence, and quality of life for people living with Parkinson’s.

Over the past four years, Apollo’s Advanced Movement Disorders & DBS Centre has carried out the highest number of DBS procedures in the state, placing it among the leading programs in South India. The team is experienced in next-generation brain-sensing DBS systems that allow tailored stimulation based on individual patient needs.

The centre is led by Senior Consultant Neurologist and Movement Disorders Specialist Dr. Vijayashankar Paramanandam, and Senior Consultant Functional Neurosurgeon Dr. Arvind Sukumaran. Both have extensive international training and oversee detailed evaluations, precise surgical planning, and long-term personalised programming for every patient.

Dr. Ilankumaran Kaliamoorthy, CEO of Apollo Hospitals Chennai Region, said the new centre reflects Apollo’s mission to bring advanced, compassionate care to patients. He noted that cutting-edge technology combined with global expertise is transforming how Parkinson’s disease is managed.

The team has also performed India’s first Medtronic BrainSense DBS surgery, which uses real-time neural sensing and adaptive stimulation to optimise long-term outcomes.
