Dr Tanveer Abdul Majeed

Thoracic surgeon

In India, thoracic, gastrointestinal, and hepatopancreato-biliary cancers face many challenges. Diagnostic delays, intricate surgical anatomy, nonavailability of simple access to newer minimally invasive and robotic technology, the expensive nature of care, poor multidisciplinary coordination, and non availability of trained professionals make timely, accurate, and low-cost cancer care difficult.

Rising above the rest in this diverse landscape is Dr Tanveer Abdul Majeed, a highly reputed cancer surgeon of Mumbai with a number of top hospitals in his affiliations. He is a specialist in thoracic gastro intestinal, hepato-pancreato-biliary, and general surgical oncology and a specialist in performing complex cancer surgeries with both minimally invasive and robotic surgeries.

He is available for consultations at Zen Hospital - Mumbai, M.G.M Hospital - Vashi, Fortis Raheja Hospital - Mumbai and Wockhardt Hospital – Mumbai Central bringing the world’s best oncology treatments within reach of the patient. What is unique about him is his technical expertise with a patient-centered approach, meticulous planning, and a deeply empathetic manner that ensures precision without losing accessibility.

Educational Background and Professional Journey

Dr Tanveer’s medical career was influenced in his initial stage by his working father, whose career left a lasting impression on him. Inspired by that experience, he pursued MBBS and thereafter inclined towards surgery with keen interest. He has an MS in General Surgery from Indian Naval Hospital, ASVINI, Mumbai, and complemented his degrees with a DNB in General Surgery from National Board of Examinations, New Delhi.

His postgraduate experience included rigorous residency in Surgical Oncology at Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, and super specialization fellowships in minimally invasive thoracic surgery from Asian Cancer Institute under the guidance of Dr Ramakant Deshpande. During this period, he gained deep expertise in treating thoracic malignancies such as lung, esophageal, and mediastinal tumors, mastering both open and minimally invasive thoracic techniques.

His early exposure to complex chest wall reconstructions, airway surgeries, and video assisted thoracoscopic procedures laid the foundation for his later robotic work. With the realization of the need for professionalism in liver and pancreatic surgery, he underwent special training at the Asian Center for Hepatopancreatic Disease and Liver Transplantation, Singapore, from a globally acclaimed liver transplant surgeon Dato Tan K. C who had been trained in King’s College, London.

These early exposures made him an expert in thoracic and gastrointestinal oncology, where he had the ability to directly influence patient outcomes. Dr Tanveer offers a wide range of procedures and surgeries, including esophagectomies, gastrectomy’s, colectomies, Whipple resections, hepato-pancreato-biliary resections, cytoreductive surgery and HIPEC, and advanced thoracic procedures like lobectomies, pneumonectomies, mediastinal resections, and VATS-assisted procedures.
He is particularly known for his precision in minimally invasive lobectomies and complex mediastinal tumor resections, often using hybrid VATS-robotic techniques to enhance accuracy and minimize trauma. His expertise also extends to treating rare thoracic conditions such as thymomas, chest wall sarcomas, and recurrent lung cancers, where meticulous anatomical knowledge and adaptability are crucial.

His approach to these very difficult operations is meticulous pre-planning, foresightful intraoperative management, and close attention to potential complications. He recalls, “Each surgery is a puzzle; every organ and vessel must align perfectly to succeed”. Despite the challenges, including airway trauma, bleeding, and complications following surgery, his strict technique and experience have yielded consistently good results.

Excellence in surgery is a blend of knowledge, skill, & humanity

Accessibility, Affordability & Technology

Dr Tanveer is deeply committed to making advanced surgical care accessible and affordable. Recognizing that many patients in India face financial barriers, he employs multiple strategies to minimize costs, such as adjusting hospital billing grades, using only necessary instruments, personally reducing professional fees, and occasionally supporting treatment expenses from his own resources. He also assists patients in accessing charitable funds, ensuring no patient is denied care due to financial constraints.

Teamwork is central to Dr Tanveer’s practice. Each case is carefully evaluated in multidisciplinary tumor boards, integrating insights from oncologists, radiologists, cardiologists, and other specialists. In the operating room his collaboration with anesthesiologists, pulmonologists, and nursing teams ensures precision and patient safety even during the most complex procedures.

Technological innovation plays a critical role in his surgical strategy. Dr Tanveer employs robotic surgery, laparoscopy, and VATS to reduce post-operative morbidity, accelerate recovery, and enhance surgical precision. Emerging techniques such as SPY Eye imaging with indocyanine green dye allow him to assess tissue vascularity and identify lesions with unprecedented accuracy. Noninvasive video-assisted thoracic surgery is another area he is exploring, reflecting his continuous pursuit of innovation. These technologies not only improve outcomes but also expand possibilities for patients previously considered inoperable.

Future Vision

Dr Tanveer envisions expanding access to specialized surgical oncology through structured training programs and community outreach. He is developing a DNB surgical oncology program at MGM Medical College and Hospital, Navi Mumbai, and a fellowship in hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery under Maharashtra University of Health Sciences.

These initiatives aim to train the next generation of surgeons in advanced thoracic, laparoscopic, and robotic procedures. Additionally, he plans outreach programs in underserved regions, bringing consultations and surgeries to patients in smaller cities and towns. His roadmap integrates education, mentorship, and technological adoption, ensuring that both patients and trainees benefit from his expertise.
