India Reports 119 New COVID-19 Cases, Active Cases at 7,264 as of June 16

On June 16, the total number of active COVID-19 cases in India stood at 7,264, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoH&FW). The ministry’s daily bulletin reported 119 new cases recorded across the country over the last 24 hours, with Kerala continuing to be the most affected state, accounting for 87 of the fresh infections.

Other states reporting new cases include Maharashtra (38), Uttar Pradesh (37), Delhi (33), Rajasthan (30), Tamil Nadu (23), and Karnataka (18). Gujarat and Haryana each reported eight cases, followed by Punjab (7), Andhra Pradesh (6), Manipur (5), and four cases each in Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, and Assam. Uttarakhand registered three new cases, Jammu & Kashmir two, and Sikkim, Telangana, Puducherry, and Chhattisgarh one case each.

Meanwhile, no new cases were reported from Arunachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Goa, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Odisha, Mizoram, Bihar, and Tripura in the past 24 hours. Data from West Bengal is still awaited.

Since January 2025, a total of 13,604 patients have been discharged, including 689 recoveries recorded until June 16, indicating a steady recovery trend.

The nationwide COVID-19 death toll since the beginning of the year has risen to 108, with 11 new fatalities reported recently. Seven of these deaths occurred in Kerala, involving patients aged between 33 and 85, many of whom suffered from severe co-morbidities such as pneumonia, sepsis, and acute leukaemia.

Other reported deaths included an 85-year-old man from Chhattisgarh with chronic respiratory failure, a 67-year-old man from Delhi with lung cancer, a 52-year-old woman from Madhya Pradesh with bronchial asthma and diabetes, and a 47-year-old man from Maharashtra with liver cirrhosis.

Kerala continues to record the highest number of deaths this year (35), followed by Maharashtra (28), Delhi (12), Karnataka (11), Tamil Nadu (7), and Madhya Pradesh (4). States like Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Gujarat, and Rajasthan have each reported two deaths, while West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, and Jharkhand have reported one death each.

In light of the situation, the central government has launched mock drills across hospitals nationwide to assess preparedness levels, focusing on key resources such as oxygen supply, ventilators, and availability of critical medicines, ensuring readiness for any potential surge.
