  • New unit boosts Karnataka’s advanced transplant capacity
  • Fully integrated heart & lung program with MCS support
  • Strengthens coordinated emergency care with Namma Metro

Apollo Hospitals has launched a dedicated Heart & Lung Transplantation and Mechanical Circulatory Support (MCS) Unit at its Seshadripuram facility in Bengaluru, marking a major expansion of its advanced cardiac and respiratory care services in Karnataka. The unit was inaugurated in the presence of Dr. Ravishankar J, IAS, Managing Director of Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL).

This is Apollo’s first fully integrated heart and lung transplant program in Karnataka, reinforcing the state’s position as one of India’s most active contributors to organ donation. The launch comes shortly after a widely praised heart transplant where Namma Metro enabled rapid organ transport, helping reduce travel time and improving patient recovery.

Dr. Ravishankar said BMRCL is proud to assist in life-saving medical efforts, adding that fast urban mobility is becoming essential for emergency care in a growing city like Bengaluru.

The new unit includes specialized operating rooms, transplant-ready ICUs, advanced monitoring systems, and a dedicated rehab team. It will offer a full range of services, including heart, lung, and combined transplants; select multi-organ procedures; ECMO and MCS support; and a specialist retrieval team for critical patients across the region.

Dr. Kumud Kumar Dhital noted that Apollo’s teams in Chennai and Bengaluru have built a strong clinical foundation over the past two years, enabling seamless care for patients with end-stage heart and lung disease. Senior pulmonology and cardiology experts added that the program enhances pre- and post-transplant coordination, ensuring predictable and safe outcomes.

Leaders at Apollo said the new unit strengthens Karnataka’s healthcare pathways and ensures advanced transplant services are accessible closer to home. A recent transplant recipient expressed deep gratitude to the donor family and medical teams, crediting the timely metro transport for making the life-saving surgery possible.
