Laparoscopic & Robotic Surgeon

India’s healthcare landscape has undergone a transformative evolution over the past two decades with an expanding network of multi-specialty hospitals, technologically advanced infrastructure and skilled medical professionals. Hence, not only has the country emerged as a global destination for affordable but high-quality treatment. Among the many specialties that have witnessed exponential growth, laparoscopic and minimally invasive surgery stands out as a groundbreaking advancement in surgical care. The laparoscopic techniques have revolutionized outcomes for surgeries ranging from gallbladder removals and hernia repairs to complex oncological resections and gastrointestinal interventions. With benefits such as faster recovery, reduced pain, lower infection risk, and improved cosmetic results, laparoscopic surgery has become a cornerstone of modern surgical practice in India.

Among the most distinguished professionals driving this evolution is Dr Saurabh Bansal. With over 15 years of experience and more than 10,000 successful surgeries, Dr Saurabh Bansal epitomizes a rare blend of surgical skill, visionary thinking, and compassionate patient care.

The Journey of Dedication & Expertise

Dr Saurabh Bansal’s medical journey began with his MBBS and post graduate studies in Gujarat and Delhi, where he laid the foundational knowledge for his future specialization. After completing his surgical post graduation, he pursued senior residency while preparing for advanced training in minimal access surgery. His quest for mastery led him to the GEM Hospital in Coimbatore, one of Asia’s premier centers for laparoscopic surgery.

Here, he honed his skills in a high-volume environment, participating and observing over 7,000 surgeries.

Taking his expertise to the next level, Dr Saurabh Bansal secured a fellowship in colorectal and robotic surgery at CMUH in Taiwan by gaining international exposure and training in highly complex procedures. These experiences gave him the confidence to operate independently in unfamiliar clinical settings and handle complicated cases with
finesse. His interest in laparoscopic techniques was sparked early in his government healthcare tenure, where he witnessed the profound benefits of minimally invasive surgery in gallbladder and hernia treatments. Over time, this evolved into a passion for routine laparoscopic procedures along with special interest in laparoscopic oncology and robotic-assisted procedures, particularly for colorectal, esophageal and pancreatic cancers.

Focused Teamwork & Technology Drive

Dr. Saurabh Bansal emphasizes that laparoscopic surgery is not just technically demanding but also mentally rigorous, with the requirement of precise coordination between hand, eye and foot movements. He relies heavily on continuous self-learning, simulation training, video analysis, and most importantly mentorship, which results in experiencing diverse levels of treatment techniques. A strong advocate of team-based surgery, he attributes his success to seamless collaboration between anesthetists, assistant surgeons, scrub nurses, and support staff.

As per Dr Saurabh Bansal, no surgical success is possible without a highly coordinated team and staff. While he selectively uses robotic technology for specific cases like deep pelvic rectal cancers and complex abdominal surgeries, Dr Saurabh Bansal remains pragmatic. He acknowledges the high costs associated with robotic systems in India and reserves their use for cases where they deliver clear clinical advantages over traditional laparoscopy.

Stories of Hope & Surgical Triumph

Throughout his career, Dr Saurabh Bansal has been at the heart of numerous life-changing success stories. One such case involved a patient from Kazakhstan, who had been turned away from major hospitals due to complex liver tumors. He successfully performed a laparoscopic procedure sparing the patient from a large incision and extensive recovery. Another inspiring story featured an obese rectal cancer patient, where a combined laparoscopic and robotic approach yielded excellent long-term outcomes. These stories not only highlight his technical excellence but also underscore the profound human impact of his work. His ability to blend advanced surgical techniques with empathy and reassurance has earned him deep respect from patients both in India and abroad.

Future Roadmap

Working with major hospitals and encouraging medical tourism for day care surgeries and leading complex cases at ‘The clinics’, Dr Saurabh Bansal’s journey stands as a beacon of leadership for young surgeons and a model of modern surgical excellence in India.

Looking ahead, he envisions a healthcare model that provides high-quality, minimally invasive surgery to every corner of the country. His goal is to develop cost-effective daycare surgical centers that bridge the gap between large corporate hospitals and smaller clinics. These centers would offer advanced care at affordable rates, improving accessibility for middle and lower-income communities. Dr Saurabh Bansal is equally passionate about education. He actively mentors young surgeons and utilizes platforms like social media and international conferences to share surgical insights. He aims to continue this vital work.
