Discovering the latent rhythm within modern life’s pace holds promise for holistic well-being. Amid this quest, a concern emerges—lack of health awareness prevails in India, where ailments like cardiovascular diseases proliferate. Unlike the West, cardiac issues surface a decade earlier here, impacting individuals as young as 35 or 45. This unsettling trend stems from an education gap about heart health and unfamiliarity with stress management. Amidst the corporate rush, life’s symphony falters, leading to erratic schedules.

Rekindling rhythm through yoga, meditation, and mindful practices can mend this dissonance, potentially alleviating health impacts, a thought shared by one of the eminent cardiac surgeons in the country, Dr. Mohit Sharma. His pioneering initiative of incorporating yoga and meditation as integral components of recovery post-surgery has witnessed remarkable success, culminating in improved patient outcomes and a renewed quality of life.

Dr. Mohit Sharma emerges as a beacon of change within cardiovascular health, driven by his unwavering commitment to addressing the critical concerns that plague the Indian populace. As a distinguished cardiac surgeon, he stands at the forefront of bridging the gap between medical science and holistic well-being. With a career spanning over a decade, Dr. Sharma’s expertise has traversed the intricacies of surgical precision, compelling him to explore novel avenues for promoting heart health.

“I am among the very few cardiac surgeons in India who practice yoga and impart its teachings as well,” says Dr. Sharma, Associate Professor (Cardio- Vascular & Thoracic Surgery Department), S.M.S. Medical College, Jaipur. The trajectory that led this accomplished professional to specialize in cardiac surgery was not serendipitous but an affirmative choice grounded in a revelation during his tenure at the Bikaner Medical College.
Observing the intricate ballet of bypass and mitral valve surgeries unfolded before him; a defining moment was sparked. It illuminated the path he was meant to tread, catalyzing his journey toward specializing in cardiac surgery. Beyond the dichotomy of general surgery choices, the allure of cardiac surgery enraptured Dr. Sharma, ultimately culminating in pursuing M.C.H. in cardiac surgery.

The cusp of technology and compassion manifests in minimally invasive cardiac surgery. Dr. Sharma navigates through innovations like central cannulation and small incisions with deft precision, paving a transformative passage for patients. A passage where recovery is expedited, mortality is minimized, and the prospect of normalcy is restored. Akin to a conductor orchestrating an intricate symphony, his team amalgamates the skills of anesthetists, cardiologists, surgeons, and perfusionists, directing a harmonious approach to patient care.

Healing Hearts and Minds
Gratification springs forth from the tangible metamorphosis that surgery affects. Witnessing a patient leave the confines of the hospital with renewed vigor and a smile of newfound vitality is an affirmation of purpose. Notably, even beyond the operation theater, Dr. Sharma’s Art of Living sessions contribute to lives being rescripted, where mindfulness is sown, and stress is alleviated, thereby fostering a sense of well-being. Within this context, Dr. Sharma regularly conducts happiness programs and imparts knowledge on meditation, including the profound Samadhi meditation program.

The motivation that fuels his dual journey is deeply rooted in his understanding of the pervasive stress levels in the medical profession and everyday life. Dr. Sharma firmly believes that excessive stress can be a harbinger of numerous health issues. This awareness and genuine concern for society’s well-being drives his commitment to teaching yoga alongside his medical practice.

His daily yoga sessions, conducted on Zoom from 5:30 to 7 a.m., attract participants from across India and various corners of the globe. These sessions primarily revolve around Sri Sri Yoga level one (SSY level one), encompassing vital elements such as Surya Namaskar, asanas, pranayama, Sudarshan Kriya, and meditation. Through these practices, he empowers individuals to lead healthier lives.

The central tenet of Dr. Sharma’s message is that meditation is no longer a luxury but an imperative for modern life. His vision transcends regional boundaries, and he fervently believes that meditation should reach every corner of the world. In a world marked by escalating stress and challenges, he advocates dedicating just 20 minutes each morning and evening to meditation, a practice that can substantially reduce stress levels and enhance the quality of daily life.

Unsurprisingly, Dr. Sharma’s journey has been punctuated by accolades - the Rajasthan Health Award, YSAR recognition, and the Dainik Bhaskar Doctor of Choice Award - a testament to his commitment and the lives he has touched. Yet, above these laurels, the heart swells most profoundly when individuals absorb the tenets of wellness, embracing yoga as a lifestyle rather than a mere curative measure. As Dr. Sharma treads through the corridors of medicine, the aspiration remains unwavering - to infuse each heart with the melody of mindfulness and cultivate a symphony of well-being reverberating across borders.
