Dr Shiva Kumar
Gastroenterologist
What separates him in this highly specialized area is the ability to combine sharp clinical acumen with exceptional procedural skills, particularly in managing complex conditions involving bile duct stones, gastrointestinal bleeding, chronic liver disease, and tumors requiring advanced interventions. His practice sees a wide spectrum of conditions-from the most common disorders like GERD, functional dyspepsia, and ulcers to intricate diseases of the hepatobiliary tree.
Known for his patient-centric approach, he combines medical, procedural, and lifestyle-based counsel to ensure long-term gut health for those under his care. “The most meaningful award for me is the gratitude in a patient’s eyes after recovery that is the real recognition”, says Dr Shiva Kumar, Gastroenterologists, Sahyadri Narayana Multispeciality Hospital.
A Journey Shaped by Excellence
Dr Shiva Kumar’s journey began in a small village in Karnataka, where his earliest inspiration came from observing visiting doctors who brought hope and healing to rural communities. This childhood dream brought him to the Government Medical College , Mysore, and exposed him to a stimulating academic environment teeming with enthusiastic peers, all striving to join India’s top institutions.
Excellence beckoned him in the form of the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) at Chandigarh, where he earned his Internal Medicine training and was introduced to an exacting, intellectually charged environment.
The constant clinical discussions, multidisciplinary exposure, and mentorship from senior physicians stoked his interest in gastroenterology. He found himself drawn to the specialty’s combination of bedside diagnosis, problem-solving, and hands-on therapeutic capability.
After completing his DM at PGI, he worked at Vikram Jyoth Hospital in Mysore, where he honed his skills and embraced the precision, discipline, and advanced procedural expertise these premier institutions are known for. He is currently working at Sahyadri Narayana Hospital, where he continues to be actively associated. These formative years instilled in him a holistic approach-one that values clinical insight as much as technological advance and patient empathy as much as procedural mastery.
Today, his expertise in managing complex hepatobiliary conditions is saliently brought out, especially his ability to perform high-risk ERCP cases in patients with cardiac pacemakers, COPD, or multisystem disease. His collaborative style ensures a seamless teamwork with cardiologists, pulmonologists, nephrologists, and anesthesiologists to enable safer outcomes for high-risk patients. “Holistic medicine begins with listening patients often tell you the diagnosis if you give them the space”, Dr Shiva Kumar reflects.
Innovation, Prevention & Continuous Learning
Over the past decade, procedures such as ERCP and EUS have revolutionized the way gastroenterologists diagnose and treat diseases. Dr Shiva Kumar has been at the forefront of this transformation, using advanced endoscopic skills to reduce the need for open surgeries, shorten recovery time, and intervene early in precancerous or malignant conditions. He has performed rare minimally invasive endoscopic tumor resections at the district level, and procedures that were available only at major metropolitan centers have been successfully performed. He is a strong believer in continual learning and remains updated through global journals, national and international conferences, and collaborations with senior experts.
He subscribes to American, Indian, and Japanese gastroenterology journals that help him stay in step with the latest evidence and technological advancements, including AI-assisted diagnostic tools that are increasingly shaping the profile of early tumor detection. Dr Shiva Kumar’s preventive philosophy remains simple and rooted in ancestral wisdom. He advocates fresh, unprocessed food; reduced oil, spice, and refined carbohydrates; balanced protein intake; and mindful eating. His guidance is individualized to each patient’s lifestyle, stress patterns, and medical history. He also encourages young doctors to approach gastroenterology with patience, precision, and empathy, reminding them that true expertise comes not just from mastering procedures but from understanding the human being behind the diagnosis.
Future Vision
Dr Shiva Kumar envisions a future where AI-driven diagnostics, early tumor detection systems, and new generations of minimally invasive endoscopic procedures redefine gastrointestinal care. He is particularly excited about innovations that allow complex surgeries to be replaced by precision endoscopic therapies, improving safety and significantly reducing patient recovery time. His long-term goal is to continue expanding access to advanced GI care in semi-urban and rural regions, ensuring that cutting-edge treatments are not limited to major cities.
