Kenvue, recognized as the largest consumer health company focused solely on this sector, has announced a strategic partnership with the Indian Dental Association (IDA) aimed at enhancing scientific research related to the use of mouthwashes in oral health care.

As part of this collaboration, the IDA will incorporate a training module into its accredited curriculum that emphasizes the rationale behind using antibacterial mouthwashes during dental procedures. This initiative is set to educate over 75,000 dental professionals across India, providing them with the latest evidence-based practices for effective infection prevention in clinical settings.

In alignment with the National Dental Accreditation Programme (NDAP) and the Continuing Oral & Dental Education (CODE) programme, IDA dentists will learn about various aspects of mouthwash usage, including its rationale in dental practice, the significance of Pre-Procedural Rinse (PPR), and the mechanisms through which antibacterial mouthwashes operate.

Additionally, IDA dentists will gain insights into the safety and tolerability of essential oil-based mouthwashes, supported by extensive clinical research that confirms their proven safety and effectiveness.

Studies indicate that bacterial aerosols produced during dental procedures can significantly increase the risk of infection transmission. Pre-procedural rinsing with an antibacterial mouthwash has been shown to reduce viable bacteria in aerosols for up to 40 minutes post-rinsing. Essential oil-based mouthwashes have also proven effective in minimizing bacteremia and viral contamination in oral fluids, making them an essential part of modern infection control in dentistry.

In addition to their role in infection control, mouthwashes are important for addressing various oral health issues. Research has demonstrated that mouthwashes can effectively eliminate bad breath by targeting the germs responsible for producing volatile sulfur compounds, which are the main contributors to oral odor. Patients undergoing orthodontic treatment can also benefit from mouthwash use, as it helps prevent plaque accumulation and gingivitis.

Furthermore, essential oil-based mouthwashes have been shown to be compatible with dental implants and composite restorations, aiding in the reduction of plaque on titanium surfaces. They can also be beneficial for elderly patients and individuals with diabetes, who are at a higher risk for oral health problems such as periodontal disease and dental caries.
