Separator
Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras have introduced 'NeoStand', an innovative electric standing wheelchair designed to enhance accessibility for people with disabilities. Launched, NeoStand offers wheelchair users the ability to effortlessly transition from sitting to standing with just the touch of a button, revolutionizing their mobility and independence.

According to the IIT Madras statement, NeoStand opens up a world of possibilities for wheelchair users, allowing them to engage in eye-level conversations, reach for objects, or enjoy simple activities like having a cup of coffee while standing at a counter. This groundbreaking technology aims to empower individuals with disabilities by providing them with greater autonomy and inclusion in various aspects of daily life.

Professor Sujatha Srinivasan from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at IIT Madras, who led the development of NeoStand, highlighted its therapeutic benefits. The wheelchair enables users to stop at intermediate positions, facilitating gradual standing practice, which is crucial from a therapeutic perspective. This feature not only promotes physical well-being but also enhances the wheelchair user's overall quality of life.

NeoStand follows in the footsteps of previous innovations from the IIT Madras team, including 'Arise', India's first manual standing wheelchair, and 'NeoBolt', the country's inaugural motorized wheelchair add-on. These advancements underscore the institute's commitment to leveraging technology for the betterment of society, particularly for individuals with disabilities.

Justin Jesudas, a person with quadriplegia, emphasized the significance of NeoStand, highlighting how the ability to stand independently with the push of a button enhances inclusivity and autonomy for wheelchair users. With NeoStand, individuals with disabilities can now enjoy greater freedom and accessibility in their daily activities, marking a significant step towards a more inclusive society.
