IIT Kharagpur established a 10-member panel to examine mental health concerns, analyze challenges, and recommend enhancements for student and faculty welfare on campus.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur has announced the establishment of a special committee to tackle mental health problems. The ten-member committee will comprise experienced psychologists, legal and police officers, educationists, counsellors, and alumni.

The major objective of the committee is to evaluate the several factors, primary, secondary, or tertiary, which affect the mental well-being and emotional state of students, faculty, and staff on campus. It will also consider the challenges that affect the delivery of effective mental health care. These may range from insufficient resources, administrative barriers, and factors related to the academic environment, among others.

The committee has also been entrusted to scrutinize prevailing mental health initiatives within the institute and suggest avenues for further developing the support mechanism. Notably, it shall directly interact with various stakeholder groups within the IIT Kharagpur ecosystem to acquire multiple viewpoints and inputs.

Officials from IIT Kharagpur informed that the move is an expression of the institute's continuous endeavor to provide a secure, welcoming, and caring environment for everyone on the campus. The establishment of the committee is an initiative to address mental health
issues in a formal and empathetic manner.

The committee will review its work and submit a detailed report with workable suggestions within three months.
