Dr. Aditya Raut & Dr. Kumud Raut, OphthalmologistsGiven the greater access to information and application of care available today, the healthcare market faces pressing challenges to attend to patients now. However, the healthcare dynamics have significantly evolved over the period, and the effects have been observed across the departments. In this regard, Ophthalmology in the healthcare space has undergone a noteworthy transformation too. Ophthalmology represents a critical field in health care, addressing complex issues related to diverse eye conditions including cataracts, glaucoma, retina, squint, and more. As per Statista, as the revenue generated in the eye Care market in India amounts to $67.53 million in 2024, it is projected to grow further at an annual growth rate of 5.18 percent from 2024 to 2029 (CAGR 2024-2029). While there are many contributing factors revolutionizing the space, they are the healthcare leaders who are proving it worth while to believe in the procedure and practice of treatment for enhanced healthcare outcomes.

Here,Dr. Aditya Raut and Dr. Kumud Raut, the exceptional ophtha-lmologists are to be well-recognized for their expertise and proficiency in the space. The duo are making a mark in the eye healthcare space bringing a wealth of knowledge to their role as Ophthalmologists, and their private venture ‘Raut Eye Care’ stands a testament to their skills. Raut Eye Care is a leading eye hospital in Pune, having performed more than 100,000 cataract surgeries and 50,000+ refractive surgeries. It provides a broad range of services like cataract and refractive surgery, retinal surgery, glaucoma checkup and surgery, squint, oculoplasty, and more.

Crafting Unique Stories in Threads & Tech

Dr. Aditya is an MBBS from Bharatiya Vidya Peeth Medical College, Pune and has also obtained a Diploma in Ophthalmology & Phacoemulsification fellowship, consecu- tively at HV DESAI Hospital, Pune. Later, he actively sought additional training, undertaking a fellowship in cataract surgery and glaucoma at Aravind Eye Hospital, Pondicherry. However, Dr. Aditya’s vision extended beyond textbooks and specialized techniques. He believed in the fact that true expertise comes from experience. Thus, inspired by his father who is also a respected Ophthalmologist, he ventured into his career by practising and gaining experience by learning different types of glaucoma and cataract surgeries at his father’s hospital. Each day brought new challenges – complex surgeries, diverse patients, and the constant push to refine his skills.

He yearned to understand the full spectrum of ophthalmic care. This led him to explore various settings like rural outreach programs where he brought essential eye care to underserved communities, a private practice where he catered to a wider range of needs, and even working with the underprivileged; ensuring they too had access to quality ophthalmic services. Witnessing all types of surgeries firsthand instilled in Aditya a diverse perspective; every new center he visited, and every fellowship he pursued, broadened his horizons. This exposure not only equipped him with a wider range of skills but also made him keenly aware of the varying needs of patients. He is extremely passionate about the surgical part of ophthalmology and mainly cataract, glaucoma and LASIK or refractive surgery. Thus, he has been effectively leading the patient care part at Raut Eye Care.

However, the success of Raut Eye Care doesn’t just belong to Dr. Aditya Raut as his wife Dr. Kumud Raut, a recognized Ophthalmologist also contributes to the venture’s evolution over the years. Dr. Kumud has completed her MBBS from Terna Medical College Mumbai, followed by an internship at Municipal Hospital in Vashi, which provided her with a broad outlook towards understanding healthcare in India. Later, having pursued her MS in ophthalmology at Manipal Hospital, Karnataka, she also completed her cataract surgery fellowship at HV Desai Eye Hospital Pune. There she gained invaluable experience by operating in multiple camps to help the underprivileged. She also did her secondary DNB and a phacoemulsification fellowship from the same institute. Dr. Kumud has worked as a senior registrar at Sion Hospital and as an assistant professor at Bombay Hospital, where she gained further experience and insights into healthcare in India.

Her motivation to specialize in ophthalmology comes from her desire to restore sight to the needy and help as many
people as possible to avoid blindness. She is particularly passionate about cataract surgery and Lasik surgery and specializes in giving refractive outcomes to cataract patients, reducing their dependence on glasses after surgery. She finds it extremely satisfying to see happy faces on the first day after surgery.

The Critical Disorders, Unique Approach, & Care Advices

Dr. Aditya says, “Patient care is all about compassion and thus be followed holistically, with utmost honesty and integrity”. He understands that a successful outcome isn’t just about clinical precision. It is about the patient experience. He sees the apprehension in their eyes, the fear of surgeries. So, he focuses on painless procedures, refining surgical techniques to minimize discomfort. This focus on patient comfort and this commitment to a stressfree experience is another hallmark of his practice.

Striving forward with a mission to make eye care more accessible & convenient for all

Spotlighting the eye disorders, Dr. Aditya delineates, “Every eye health case is different basis the disorders caused by it. The most common eye disorder cases we find at our hospital are cataracts, which patients basically form with the degeneration of the lens inside the eye with the old age. The most common symptoms are a slow drop in vision over time. We also see a lot of glaucoma cases, which involves the vision loss slowly over time. It is called the silent killer because it reduces the vision without the patient really realizing the condition. Also, the third most important common disease is diabetic retinopathy”.

However, given the diverse disorders, he also takes a unique approach to cure each time. In certain cases, if the patient’s life quality is not being affected or compromised by the cataract, he doesn’t necessarily prefer performing cataract surgery. But, in cases of glaucoma, when quality of life may get compromised if not operated for cataracts or else the person may go blind, surgery is opted. Most of all if it concerns retina, with disorders such as diabetic retinopathy or hypertensive retinopathy, treatment is always required. In all cases, it is always ensured that how much a patient is going to benefit with certain treatments or surgery and thereby the respective is chosen.

The Idea of Partnership that Helps to Maintain Work-Life Balance

As a woman in the medical field, Dr. Kumud Raut has faced challenges in balancing work and life. However, she believes that women have a natural nurturing ability, leading to less fear in patients. Honing these skills is crucial for women doctors not only in India but also all over the world.

Dr. Kumud Raut and her husband Dr. Aditya navigate any potential differences that may arise in their professional collaborations by discussing complicated cases before making a decision on the course of treatment. They always inform the patient that either one of them will give a second opinion, and after discussion they implement whatever they feel is best for the patient. She recalls a memorable patient success story, one of a 102-year-old patient who could restore vision in both eyes and continued to play video games on her mobile phone.

Embracing Technological Advancements

Dr. Aditya and Dr. Kumud shared, “The future of ophthalmology looks promising, with advancements like AI-assisted diagnostics, gene therapy for genetic eye diseases, and minimally invasive surgeries enhancing patient care and outcomes. Technology will continue to play a vital role in early detection, personalized treatments, and improving quality of life for patients with vision impairments. However, the human-centric approach ensures that technology serves humanity, rather than overshadowing it.”

Their approach to eye care goes beyond just treating conditions; it’s about guiding patients toward a healthier lifestyle. “Diet and screen time are two major lifestyle factors that can significantly impact your eyes”, Dr. Aditya remarks. Understanding the impact of everyday habits like diet and screen time on eye health, he ensures that each patient receives advice and counseling. Whether it’s recommending dietary changes or suggesting screen time management strategies, he empowers patients to take control of their ocular health.

Dr. Kumud also firmly believes that a healthy mind can only reside in a healthy body and counsels all patients on how to maintain a healthy lifestyle and balance their work and life. She recommends taking short breaks during screen time to avoid eye strain. She adds, “Indeed, we determine an appropriate treatment plan for a patient by conducting a thorough examination following a fixed protocol backed by scientific research and proof. Proper counseling of the patient and understanding their needs is crucial”.

What distinguishes Dr. Kumud Raut and her husband from other ophtha-lmologists is their honesty, integrity, discipline, education, and the highest standard of healthcare. They provide premium surgical outcomes with less pain or discomfort, ensuring their patients receive the best possible eye care.
