Dr. Gayathri Meganathan's journey into the field of medicine began with a solid academic foundation. She earned her bachelor's and master's degrees in medicine from a prestigious government medical college, where she honed her skills and gained a deep understanding of the complexities of the human body. She underwent a transformative medical competency qualification and became Member of Royal College of Obstertrician and Gynaecologist, MRCOG (London),UK, which is globally recognized as the gold standard qualification in Obstetrics and Gynecology specialty. This experience not only expanded her knowledge but also fueled her determination to make a significant impact in the field. Additionally, she received laparoscopic training in Delhi from Dr. R. K. Mishra who is a pioneer in the field of laproscopy. She also completed her embryology training under Indian Society of Reproductive Medicine (ISAR). Currently, she is in the process of completing a fellowship in reproductive medicine.
Well, her professional journey began in West Africa, where she worked at the John F. Kennedy Tertiary Centre, followed by additional training in Mumbai. Subsequently, she had the opportunity to work in the Dominican Republic, one of the Caribbean islands. Upon returning to India, she devoted 9-10 years to her career at Cloudnine Hospitals and Narayana Hrudayalaya Hospital in Bangalore.
For the past three years, she’s running her own clinic, Happy Lyfe Women’s Health Clinic & Diagnostics Centre, and also serves as a visiting consultant at Cloudnine Kauvery, and Narayana Hospitals, Bangalore. This encapsulates her work experience so far.
The Wondrous Journey with Happy Lyfe Clinic
The inception of the Happy Life Women's Health Clinic marked a pivotal juncture in Dr. Gayathri's career and a paradigm shift in OB-GYN landscape. Having worked in developed and under developed countries she incorporates everything she’s learned about healthcare systems into this clinic. At Happy Lyfe Clinic, Dr. Gayathri and her team offer a holistic approach to gynecological surgery. They consider not only the physical symptoms, but also the patient's emotional stress, mental well-being, and financial situation, as building a rapport with the patient is their starting point. They provide the patient with various treatment options, including medical and surgical approaches, and support them in making informed decisions about their healthcare. “Cesarean sections have become the most common type of surgery for obstetricians and gynecologists. This has led to a dramatic decrease in the rate of normal deliveries. Additionally, recovery time is longer and there are surgical risks involved. It's important to reconsider this trend and work towards increasing the rate of normal deliveries for the well-being of women", shares Dr. Gayathri.
Being a woman herself, Dr. Gayathri's inspiration lies in understanding and addressing the medical needs and difficulties faced by other women. Her interest particularly lies in laparoscopy as it allows faster healing and less time off work compared to traditional surgeries which eventually helps in creating work-life balance for women. Additionally, her interest in Embryology and Reproductive Medicine stems from the rising trend of infertility.
Raising Awareness & Advancing the Field
In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Gayathri is planning on creating awareness programs about cancer and education through community initiatives. Dr. Gayathri and her team are also working on some upcoming projects related to Obesity and PCOS management like starting up an exclusive PCO Clinic and creating an HPV vaccination drive. “The project I'm already working on is the screening test for cervical cancer. Over the past two years, I have conducted more than 1000 screening tests”, says Dr. Gayathri.
Today, there are evolving medical conditions due to life style changes & food habits, such as the increasing prevalence of Obesity and Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), Infertility and Cancers at younger age which pose significant challenges. Additionally, there is a greater emphasis on identifying cancers at earlier stages. These challenges exist for doctors, patients, and in the medical conditions themselves. Nowadays, lot of information from social media has its own advantage & disadvantage. Good part is people are more aware of health problems but at same time it creates confusion, anxiety, & self-diagnosis. So it is important to consult a doctor before taking any self-treatment/self-diagnosis. Adopting healthy life style modification are also crucial in effectively managing medical conditions.
Dr. Gayathri is proficiently and effectively leading the gynecology healthcare. Her exemplary career in OB-GYN surgery demonstrates her commitment to excellence, innovation, and patient-centered care. She regularly attends both online and offline CMEs, and networks with peers, including colleagues and seniors, to stay updated. Her interest in embryology and Reproductive Medicine is driven by the increasing trend of infertility. Dr. Gayathri’s mission is to impact at least one million women's lives throughout her career.
