Consultant Nephrologist & Transplant Physician

Along with the population, India is leading in the number of kidney patients as well. With almost 1 in 6 being a kidney patient, it is a hard question to face. The spectrum of nephrology is enormous with two key areas demanding attention Glomerulonephritis, a disease common among the young and middle-aged population, and the crucial consideration of Kidney Transplants as an alternative to prolonged dialysis. Glomerulonephritis, characterized by inflammation of the glomeruli, the tiny filters in the kidneys responsible for removing waste and excess fluids from the blood, shows in various forms. The reason it affects individuals in their teens or middle age sets it apart, making it a disease of significant concern in the prime years of life. On the other hand, dialysis, while a life-saving intervention, comes with its own set of challenges and limitations. Long-term reliance on dialysis can impact the patient’s quality of life, and the associated financial burden can be substantial. By addressing these unique challenges posed by Glomerulonephritis and championing kidney transplants, Dr. Suhas Mondhe stands at the forefront of ushering in a new era in nephrology one that prioritizes early intervention, personalized care, and a vision for sustainable, improved outcomes for kidney patients.

Dr. Mondhe recognizes the kidneys as health sentinels, often as early indicators of underlying health issues. Broader health conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, or autoimmune disorders will affect the kidney function more vigorously. By focusing on nephrology, Dr. Mondhe diligently monitors and interprets the signals kidneys provide to ensure timely intervention and holistic patient care. His dedication extends to advocating for preventive measures that safeguard kidney health and, by extension, overall health. This may involve promoting lifestyle modifications, encouraging regular health check-ups, and raising awareness about factors impacting kidney function. “A good regular investigation and yearly health check-ups can give an understanding about the silent killers like hypertension and kidney disease", says Dr. Suhas Mondhe, Consultant Nephrologist and Transplant Physician at Urokul Hospital.
Personalized Approach to Care
Dr. Suhas Mondhe emphasizes the importance of individualizing patient treatment, considering multiple aspects to personalize interventions. A distinguishing feature of his practice is the meticulous time invested in understanding each patient’s problem, allocating approximately 45 minutes to an hour for consultations a practice uncommon among many nephrologists in the subcontinent. Dr. Mondhe practices a personalized approach in the treatment in his current practice. In addition, his relentless focus on enhancing the quality of life for his patients becomes a guiding principle in every treatment decision he makes. Illustrated through his work in a dialysis unit, where he has conducted around 500 sessions since returning to India, Dr. Mondhe proudly reports a zero-infection rate and minimal multiple hospitalizations among patients. Even minor issues like blood pressure changes are carefully managed, ensuring no major complication arises.

Dr. Suhas Mondhe envisions a future where nephrology in India transcends mere numbers of transplants

Dr. Mondhe’s trajectory toward specializing in Glomerulonephritis and Kidney Transplants unfolded through pivotal educational and professional experiences, shaping his perspective and priorities in nephrology. Commencing his medical education at the esteemed Poona Hospital in Pune, he laid a robust foundation focusing on DNB medicine. His journey progressed to CARE Hospitals Banjara Hills, Hyderabad, for nephrology specialization, marking a source of pride for him. Transitioning to a consultant role at CARE Hospitals, he delved into the intricacies of transplant patient care, where he discerned the need for enhanced outcomes in kidney transplants. Motivated to seek excellence in transplantation, Dr. Mondhe embarked on a transformative journey to Canada, joining the University of Ottawa for a solid organ transplant fellowship. Dedicated to improving kidney transplant procedures, he spent a year comprehensively studying the subject. Subsequently, during his tenure in Ottawa, Dr. Mondhe collaborated with experts in glomerulonephritis, leading him to undertake a ground breaking one-year fellowship explicitly dedicated to this condition, a first in Ottawa. Moving to London, Canada, he further honed his skills as a working nephrologist at the University of Western Ontario, actively participating in the renowned dialysis department. Dr. Mondhe’s commitment extended to two distant fellowships with the International Society of Nephrology facilitated in collaboration with the American Nephrologist of Indian Origin. These fellowships, combined with his experiences in transplant and glomerulonephritis, solidified his core area of interest in these specialized subsets of nephrology.

Dr. Mondhe envisions a future where nephrology in India transcends mere numbers of transplants. Instead, he emphasizes the need for indigenous research, data collection, and the development of Indian guidelines for treating kidney diseases. Through initiatives like Nephrocon a group of young nephrologists dedicated to collecting and analyzing glomerular disease data, Dr. Mondhe aims to position India as a leader in nephrological research. As he continues to leave an indelible mark on nephrology, his vision extends beyond the immediate horizon. It encompasses a future where Indian nephrology sets its standards, rooted in research, patient-centric care, and a commitment to improving the lives of those grappling with kidney diseases. In a dynamic realm where kidney health is paramount, Dr. Mondhe emerges not just as a nephrologist but as a visionary shaping the trajectory of the field in India.
