Senior Consultant Surgical Oncologist & Minimal Invasive & Robotic Surgeon

With significant advancements in medicine and critical care, the healthcare industry is thriving today. Healthcare professionals such as surgeons, doctors, and industry leaders play a crucial role in balancing medical expertise with business acumen. Their dedication and passion for patient care deserve recognition. Dr Rajesh Goud, a Consultant Surgical Oncologist, is a distinguished figure in the field, known for his committed contributions as a surgical oncologist.

Dr Rajesh Goud is a distinguished medical professional who earned his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from Osmania Medical College in Hyderabad, achieving the top rank in his graduating class. Driven by a strong passion for surgery, he opted to specialize in this field, specifically choosing general surgery over other disciplines like internal medicine. During his residency, Dr Rajesh was exposed to various surgical subspecialties, including gastroenterology. However, he developed a particular interest in surgical oncology, which he found both challenging and rich in opportunities for advancement and research. This fascination led him to pursue a Master of Chirurgiae (MCh) in surgical oncology at Osmania Medical College, where he graduated with distinction as a gold medalist. After this achievement, he even dedicated a year to working at a government institute in Osmania before moving on to corporate hospitals to further his career in surgical oncology.

Well, Gynecological Oncology was never his career path from the start, however, while dealing with various types of cancer, when he noticed that a significant majority of cancer cases in India are female cancers, specifically breast carcinoma and gynecological cancers, he felt intrigued consciously. He even found much of the existing literature highlighting that many of these cancers are preventable and with proper education and the detection of early stages, the outcomes could be significantly improved. These are often referred to as ‘good cancers’ to treat, as they have high survival rates. However, the incidence of these cancers remains high. This is why the professionals need to be involved in addressing this issue, so the best possible care can be provided to the patients.

He says that one aspect that particularly motivated him is the precision of surgery, especially when operating on women. He understands how crucial the role of a female caregiver is in a family. For instance, when a mother is not at home, it can cause significant distress for the family, whereas if a father is away, the impact may not be as profound. This insight drives his commitment to ensure that whenever he performs surgery related to women’s health, he provides the best possible solutions that facilitate a quick recovery. The sooner mothers can return
home, the better for the entire family. This understanding led him to develop his skills in robotic surgery, allowing him to provide top-quality care and enhance recovery times for his patients.

Cancer treatment is inherently multidisciplinary, and there’s no single specialist who handles everything. Hence, for each cancer case, he works closely with a team that includes medical oncologists and radiation oncologists. Before initiating any treatment, he even discusses various options to determine the best course of action. Dr Rajesh emphasizes that his goal isn’t just to cure cancer, but also to ensure a good quality of life for the patient. Thus, he always considers the long-term implications for the patient’s overall well-being.

Spotlighting the advancements in this field, he states, “In the past, as a surgical oncologist, I primarily performed open surgeries that required five to six days of hospitalization. This often separated patients from their families, leading to emotional challenges. Since around 1998, we have introduced laparoscopy into our practice, allowing for minimally invasive gynecological oncology procedures. More recently, between 2010 and 2015, robotic surgery has provided even greater precision in removing cancerous tissues. We have shifted from a generalized treatment approach to one focused on personalized cancer care, tailoring strategies to meet each patient’s specific needs”.

In India, women often prioritize their families over their own health, leading to the neglect of their medical needs. This has historically posed a challenge, as women, commonly the primary caregivers, do not seek early diagnoses for health problems. However, over time now, there has been a positive shift due to increased awareness through media and social media, encouraging families to support women in seeking medical care. More individuals over 40 are now participating in annual health check-ups, including mammograms and Pap smears, contributing to improved early cancer detection compared to 10 to 14 years ago.

Dr Rajesh recognizes the vital role technology plays within the healthcare sector and remains committed to staying informed about the latest advancements. This philosophy serves as a guiding principle in his work as a cancer surgeon in the rapidly evolving field of cancer treatment. Currently, maintaining a receptive attitude toward innovations that have the potential to enhance patient outcomes and improve the quality of life, he has laid his focus on robotic surgery, which integrates elements of artificial intelligence. Throughout his training in robotic surgery, he gained an understanding of its advantages, particularly in performing complex procedures, such as rectal cancer surgeries.

As a surgical oncologist, Dr Rajesh has had an enriching career. He has received a gold medal too. Over the past three years consecutively, he has even been honored with the TV5 Awards for Best Upcoming Surgical Oncologist and Gynecological Oncologist. He regularly conducts Continuing Medical Education (CME) sessions in rural areas and nearby cities to educate gynecologists about the latest treatment modalities and diagnostic techniques in gynecology. In these communities, he has gained a lot of recognition too, and it fills him with pride when his advice helps someone identify cancer in its early stages, enabling patients to overcome the disease. Dr Rajesh says, “Gynecological oncology is both emotionally and physically demanding, but the impact I have on my patients’ lives makes it all worthwhile”.
