It is true that people are not aware of the diagnostic procedures involved in the pain management discipline of medical field. Patients commonly rush to orthopaedics or neurologists for chronic pains to find relief through surgical measures. Though the concept of pain management has been in discussion in medicine of late, efforts to spread awareness and the benefits of pain management usually does not see fruit. Sahara Hospital has been providing its services in the Eastern Uttar Pradesh since 2009, where pain management procedures were unvisited. By commencing its operations as the first multispecialty hospital in the region, the pain management clinic of the institution saw its dawn in 2012.
Finding Relief from Pain without Surgery
Sahara Hospital initiated the first organized fulltime pain management clinic in the Gomti Nagar region in the city of Lucknow. Ever since, the hospital has availed services for more than 10,000 patients by deploying around 1000 procedures. Sahara is on par with pain clinics in India and abroad for dealing with tip to toe intervention pain management procedures in chronic pain that persists for more than six to eight weeks. The
clinic confers various minimal procedures such as ultrasound guidance to control the pain or cure the disorder that causes pain. The treatment for most of the conditions takes few hours of a day except for spine endoscopy, for which patients are admitted for a day or two in the hospital. Among treatments for chronic low back pain and cervical pain, Sahara also aid service for radiculitis symptoms both at the cervical and the lumbar portions. Joint pains, spondylosis, severe chronic neuropathic pain, and other similar pains are also treated with utmost care. Sahara engages in performing radiofrequency ablation technology for curbing neuropathic pain. With a motto that reads 'Pain relief without surgery', the hospital advocates an alternate option to surgery in order to douse the dreadful pain. "We have met the NABH credentials and are equipped with c-arm image intensifier in operation theatres for various procedures", says Dr. Randhir Puri, Director, Sahara Hospital.
The WHO has labelled pain as the sixth vital sign which has to be monitored. Over the years, physicians in other hospitals have come across patients with chronic pain, and started to realize that there is a separate department that addresses such pains. Similar to metabolic syndrome caused by the changing lifestyle and work culture, chronic back pain and cervical pain have increased in people due to the improper postures while using mobile phones and computers. Sahara Hospital saw one of the most rewarding procedures in trigeminal neuralgia, a severe pain in the face, when it was successfully treated by performing radio frequency ablation. The hospital has also recorded remarkable recognition by suggesting spine endoscopy in lieu of major open spine surgeries. The Director of the Pain Department in Sahara, Dr. Randhir envisions to layout the expansion of the department of pain clinic, and more of its services in the list of pain management.
