Liver disease, particularly non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), has become an increasingly significant issue. As of February 2025, liver diseases, including cirrhosis, viral hepatitis, and liver cancer, are responsible for approximately 1.4 million deaths annually world wide, affecting millions more in terms of disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). Globally, liver disease claims approximately 2 million lives each year. In India alone, it is estimated that between 20,000 and 30,000 individuals require liver transplants each year. However, only about 1,500 to 2,000 transplants are conducted annually. Despite substantial advancements in liver disease treatments both in India and globally, access to liver transplantation remains hindered by high costs and limited healthcare infrastructure in various regions. Nonetheless, India has emerged as a preferred destination for liver transplants due to its comparatively affordable options and the expertise of its medical professionals.

One notable liver specialist is Dr Vaibhaw Kumar, who is recognized for his outstanding contributions to liver transplant treatment. He holds an MBBS & an MS from Delhi University, and he has completed his MCh in Liver Transplant and HPB Surgery at the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS), Delhi. His journey to becoming a Liver Transplant and HPB Surgeon was greatly influenced by his experiences attending to liver patients in emergencies and outpatient departments during his master’s program, where he witnessed the need for specialized care. It was during this time that he developed a deep sense of empathy and a commitment to serving this patient population. Notably, he continued his journey in the liver transplant space after completing his MS and enrolled for MCh at the ILBS, Delhi to receive further training in HPB surgery and liver transplantation. Today, he brings over 15 years of experience in liver transplantation and HPB (Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary) surgery, having successfully conducted more than 2,000liver transplants and complex HPB surgeries.

Dr Vaibhaw states, “A liver transplant is a major procedure that can be divided into four key phases, such as ‘patient selection’ by identifying the right time & patient for the transplant, ‘preoperative optimization’ by preparing the patient for the best recovery, ‘surgical efficiency’ by performing the procedure effectively, and ‘vigil postoperative
care’ by monitoring and addressing any postoperative issues. While all phases are important, the most critical aspect is the timely identi -fication of the right patient for the transplant”. Supported by his skilled team of highly proficient doctors and expert professionals with over 15 years of collective experience, Dr Vaibhaw has garnered significant recognition in the field of liver transplant.

Although the field of liver transplantation may seem hectic, Dr Vaibhaw maintains his composure and is dedicated to helping liver patients lead healthy lives. He has helped over 2000 patients with liver diseases from around the world. He firmly believes in treating his patients with empathy and providing high-quality of care. One case that stands out to him is that of an 11-yearold boy from Iraq who arrived in critical condition due to liver failure from a genetic disease, with other organ involvement. He was admitted to the ICU but his condition quickly worsened, requiring intubation and ventilation. At one point, he suffered a cardiac arrest, and it seemed unlikely he would survive the night. Despite the bleak outlook, Dr Vaibhaw remained positive and hopeful for his recovery. With a meticulously planned course of treatment, things took a positive turn and after ten days, the transplant was performed successfully. The boy’s recovery too was remarkably swift. Just two months ago, he returned to visit Dr Vaibhaw and the transformation in him was incredible.

These accolades have motivated him to serve with utmost commitment. Taking note of this, Dr Vaibhaw advices to all upcoming leaders, “Liver transplant and hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) surgery are vibrant and dynamic areas of medicine. However, the foundation of success in this specialty relies on a deep empathy for patients’ experiences and an unwavering commitment to providing high-quality care. This dedication requires substantial time, effort, and the full application of one’s training to support patients effectively.
