Dr Surjeet Kumar
Senior Kidney Transplant Surgeon
Dr Surjeet Kumar started his career with MBBS and then he went further for a Master of Surgery (MS) in General surgery from Patna Medical College & Hospital (PMCH), one of the oldest and most reputed medical institution of eastern India. His experience at PMCH built a solid clinical foundation for him where he had exposure on a lot of general surgery procedures and issues during his early career life. In his residency at AIIMS, New Delhi, he sharpened his expertise in trans -plant. AIIMS and its demanding academic background and heavy patient load formed Dr Surjeet Kumar’s main expertise in the field of solid organ transplantation, dialysis access surgery and gastrointestinal interventions.
In his zeal to acquire more skills, he has worked hard to get as many fellowships as possible such as FMAS (Fellowship in Minimal Access Surgery), FIAGES (Fellowship of the Indian Association of Gastro-intestinal Endo Surgeons) and FALS (Fellowship in Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery). All these higher qualifications demonstrate his commitment to constant learning and adoption of best practices in minimal invasive and advanced surgical procedures. Presently, Director of Kidney Transplant Surgery at Park Group of Hospitals, Gurugram, Senior Transplant Surgeon Dr Surjeet Kumar is globally renowned.
Areas of Expertise & Distinct Specializations
While Dr Surjeet Kumar’s core focus lies in kidney transplantation, his versatility as a surgeon is what makes him truly stand out. He is adept at performing ABO compatible and ABO-incompatible kidney transplants, making transplantation a reality even for patients with rare or mismatched blood groups, a field that demands not just surgical
expertise but deep immunological understanding. Beyond kidney transplants, Dr Surjeet Kumar specializes in dialysis access surgeries (AV fistulas and grafts), advanced GI procedures, laparoscopic and robotic surgeries, as well as laser proctology.
His work at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital in New Delhi, one of India’s busiest transplant hubs, where he worked for 13 years as consultant transplant surgeon further cemented his skill in handling high-volume, complex surgical cases. He was a core member of a team that performed 450 plus transplants annually, gaining mastery in both routine and rare cases. One of the hallmarks of Dr Surjeet Kumar’s career is his individualized approach to patient care. He brings with him clinical excellence with a good human touch. With the ability to forge deep trust with his patients, he feels that emotional preparedness of family is as important as medical fitness when it comes to success.
“A successful transplant is not just a surgical event, it’s a life restored, a family saved, and a second chance given. That’s what motivates me every single day”, says Dr Surjeet Kumar. He takes the time to educate patients and their families, explaining complex procedures in easy to-understand language and guiding them through every step from donor selection and pre-transplant preparation to post-operative care and long-term follow-up.
Technology as an Enabler of Better Outcomes
In a world where technology is revolutionising healthcare at lightning speed, Dr Surjeet Kumar has always been one step ahead. He is a strong proponent of the minimally invasive procedures, and regularly applies the laparoscopic and robotic systems to minimize pain, to create smaller scars and to speed up convalescence in donors and recipients alike. He also integrates the state of-the-art diagnostics, imaging equipment, and electronic health systems for real-time information sharing, decision-making enhancement and simplification of care coordination. Whether it is coordinating cross-matching, logistics of organ transport, or monitoring patients, Dr Surjeet Kumar opines that technology, coupled with humane care, yields the optimum outcome. His impact goes beyond the operating room.
At Park Group of Hospitals, he has successfully built transplant units at three key locations, ensuring that both urban and semi-urban populations can access advanced kidney care without having to travel far. His tenure at Shubharti Medical College & Hospital, Meerut stands out as a milestone, where he initiated a full-fledged kidney transplant program that served many underprivileged patients. With a vision for social equity in healthcare, he believes that affordability should never be a barrier to life-saving surgery. He has mentored several young surgeons, nephrologists, and transplant coordinators, shaping a new generation of specialists who are now carrying forward his legacy of excellence and empathy.
Future Vision
In the future, Dr Surjeet Kumar hopes that world-class kidney trans -plant facilities become available to all patients irrespective of their geography, income, or background. His goal is to take transplant programs to Tier II and Tier III cities, work in tandem with government programs, and raise public awareness regarding organ donation. He also wants to make post-transplant care protocols uniform across centers and create teleconsultation and longterm follow-up platforms, particularly for international patients who follow up remotely. As India grows into a global hub for medical tourism, his vision includes making ethical, safe, and affordable transplants a flagship offering from Indian healthcare.
