Robotic Gastrointestinal & Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgeon

In the last decade, India’s healthcare system has undergone a dramatic transformation. From the dawn of robotic surgery suites to the rise of AI assisted diagnostics, the country has moved far beyond the era of purely manual medicine. According to a 2024 NITI Aayog report, India is expected to become a $372 billion healthcare market by 2030, with surgical innovation playing a central role in that growth. In this dynamic ecosystem, a few clinicians emerge as pioneers who combine technical mastery with humanistic care. Among them is Dr Prasad Pande, a gastrointestinal surgeon whose journey exemplifies curiosity, dedication, and innovation.

Dr Prasad Pande’s journey starts in Mumbai where he studied MBBS at Nair Hospital and then studied MS General Surgery at RNT Medical College, Udaipur. But what really attracted him to gastroenterology was something more than intellectual aspiration. “I was intrigued by the way the human body works and how science can step in to change its course, Medicine provided me with a two-way benefit, to be able to heal people and to satisfy my scientific curiosity”, Dr Prasad Pande looks back.

This rare combination of wisdom and empathy was the foundation of his career, on a path where science and service meet. His quest for perfection led him to GB Pant Hospital, New Delhi, for basic exposure, and later to Leelavati Hospital, Mumbai, one of India’s best institutions for surgical gastroenterology. He worked and performed complex surgeries for seven years under mentorship. This was as much a time spent learning technique as it was developing precision, grit, and compassion, qualities all required to approach high stakes surgical procedures.

Expertise & Challenges

His practice spans gastrointestinal, liver, and pancreatic cancers, along with non-cancerous disorders such as gallstones and complex hernias. “Every surgery, especially in cancer, tests not just your skill but your ethical judgment and emotional resilience”, Dr Prasad Pande explains. Surgical gastroenterology, particularly oncology, often demands rapid, high-stakes decision making
where patient outcomes hinge on both knowledge and intuition. At the heart of his practice is compassionate accessibility.

Patients can reach him directly even during unconventional hours. “Nine times out of ten, a patient who calls at midnight is not asking about trivia they are in distress”, Dr Prasad Pande notes. This humanistic approach complements his technical precision, fostering a trust that is as critical to healing as the surgery itself. Patient-centered care, he believes, extends beyond the operating theater, it is about being present when it matters most.

Innovations & Technology

He strongly supports using technology in surgical care. From robotic-assisted surgeries to advanced imaging like DOTA scans and endoscopic ultrasounds, he leverages innovation to reduce trauma and improve outcomes. One notable case involved a 62-year-old woman with multiple neuroendocrine tumors in her small intestine. Through robotic surgery, the tumors were removed through small incisions, avoiding major organ resection. She went home in four days, free from complications. This case shows how technology combined with expertise can greatly enhance both outcomes and quality of life.

For Dr Prasad Pande, every surgery is not just a procedure, but a promise to heal, to guide, & to stand by his patients when they need him the most

Continuous learning is key to his approach. He attends international conferences, presents research findings, and actively studies the latest global guidelines. “Passive learning, by observing peers, and active learning, by reviewing new research, are both important”, Dr Prasad Pande says. This combined approach ensures his patients benefit from both proven and new practices, showing his dedication to lifelong learning in a quickly changing field like surgical gastroenterology.

Beyond surgery, Dr Prasad Pande promotes patient education. By explaining complex medical terms in clear, visual ways, he helps patients engage in their treatment decisions. This method connects advanced medicine with public understanding, building confidence and compliance, which leads to better outcomes. He believes that informed patients, actively involved in their care, achieve better results both medically and emotionally.

Future Vision

In the future, Dr Prasad Pande envisions a double mission, enhancing surgical accuracy and influencing healthcare policy. “I want to contribute to framing policies that bring sophisticated medical methods within everyone’s reach, not just a select few”, says Dr Prasad Pande. Motivated by curiosity, compassion, and unshakeable dedication, he guides young surgeons, researches new operating methods, and applies technology to treating patients. His vision is not only to cure disease but to revolutionize the healthcare system itself so that quality care can be provided to those in greatest need.
