Dr. Jitesh Manghwani

Consultant & Robotic Spine Surgeon

A skilled surgeon knows when to operate, but an even better one understands when not to. Putting conservative and preventative care first, spine surgeons are aware that it's frequently wiser to do less. Spine is a delicate organ and the nerves are quite sensitive. It is imperative to take preventative action and identify symptoms early. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment of illnesses can some times avoid serious consequences and eliminate the need for surgery.

Dr. Jitesh Manghwani finished his basic and advanced medical training in Mumbai. He worked in prestigious government facilities, such as Sion Hospital and KEM Hospital, where he specialized in orthopedics. He worked at KEM Hospital as an assistant professor of orthopedics. He eventually rose to the position of expert in this area. Following that, Dr. Jitesh’s career brought him to Delhi, where he worked at Maulana Azad Medical College and LNJP Hospital in addition to prestigious tertiary care facilities such as Fortis and Medanta in Gurgaon. He studied spine surgery after realizing the requirement for extreme expertise in this field and he completed his basic training in spine care at the prestigious Indian Spinal Injury Center, where he currently works as a consultant with a focus on spine disorders.

As a national educator in orthopedics and spine surgery, he supervises and trains many fellows. Dr. Jitesh also oversees a team that consists of physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and rehabilitation specialists to ensure that patients with spinal cord injuries receive comprehensive care. In addition, he strongly believes in equal health and medical facilities to all equally, he conducts various OPDs each week and offers therapy free of cost to those in need. Dr. Jitesh treats a variety of spine ailments, from mild cases of low back discomfort, slipped disc or sciatica to more complex problems such as trauma of spine, deformity, tumors and others. According to him, extended periods of sitting are the cause of the rising incidence of these ailments, and therefore 'sitting is the new smoking'.

Patient-Centric Approach

Dr. Jitesh's method places a strong emphasis on a thorough evaluation, which begins with a detailed patient history and examination. Before ordering any necessary tests, including MRIs and X-rays, to validate clinical findings, he considers the patient's medical history, allergies, surgeries, and family
history. "My diagnosis and treatment approach are not based on examining scans and prescribing treatments. I engage in detailed conversations with my patients to understand how their issues began, progressed, and developed over time, along with conducting realtime neurology and clinical examinations. Many patients appreciate that I treat them as individuals, not just as cases defined by scans", says Dr. Jitesh Manghwani, Consultant and Robotic Spine Surgeon.

Transforming Lives with Precision & Innovation

Robotic and minimally invasive spine surgery are areas in which Dr. Jitesh has received substantial training and expertise. He was among the first in India to perform robotic spine surgery and has seen a significant increase in patient results. His patients return to their regular lives and work significantly faster, several even walk the day after surgery. These cutting-edge surgical methods cause far less blood loss, stiffness, and post-operative pain, which speeds up recovery and leaves the patient with minimum scarring, maintaining their sense of self. Dr. Jitesh emphasizes that these technologies yield superior outcomes by mitigating the extended morbidity commonly linked to conventional operations.

“There was a nine-year-old girl who came to me completely paralyzed in both legs due to an improperly treated spine infection. Despite having some sensation left, which was our only ray of hope, many doctors refused her case because it was extremely complex. Using robotic technology, safe spine surgery, and O-ARM navigation, we realigned her spine, thoroughly decompressed it, and removed all infections. By the time she was discharged, she could stand. A year later, she resumed school and now lives her life like a normal 10-year-old. This case demonstrates how advanced technology can dramatically change lives, giving this child the chance to live normally”, asserts Dr. Jitesh.

Pioneering the Future with Innovative Technologies

Several new technologies in spine surgery have Dr. Jitesh excited, especially the epidural stimulator, which is still in the development stage. This method seeks to assist patients with full spinal cord injuries by connecting the upper and lower portions of the spinal cord and avoiding the injured area. This technology is being used by a few surgeons in India, including Dr. Jitesh, but the results are encouraging. Patients who had lost the ability to walk or control their bowels and bladder have occasionally recovered these abilities.

“But its efficacy varies, and there is currently no test that can accurately predict its success. I also stress the value of rehabilitation, especially considering recent developments in robotic rehabilitation, which allow patients with partial spinal cord injuries to become mobile more quickly and those with complete impairments to become independent when using a wheelchair. I stress the importance of safe spine surgery with the use of neuro monitoring, which continuously monitors electrical currents in the body to ensure that no untoward events occur during surgery. Accuracy is further improved by real-time OM navigation procedures, which also lets me watch my activities in realtime", concludes Dr. Jitesh.
