In a prestigious ceremony at the 21st edition of BioAsia, Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy was conferred the Genome Valley Excellence Award for 2024 by renowned pediatrician Prof Gregg L. Semenza. The award recognized Prof Semenza's groundbreaking discovery of the hypoxia-inducible factor 1 (HIF-1 protein), a pivotal advancement controlling gene expression in response to fluctuations in oxygen availability.

Currently holding the position of C. Michael Armstrong Professor of Genetic Medicine at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, USA, Prof Semenza's work has proven critical in the treatment of various diseases, including cancer, anemia, blinding eye diseases, and cardiovascular disorders.

Expressing gratitude to the International Advisory Board of BioAsia, Prof Semenza reflected on his career, stating, "Throughout my career, I have endeavored to increase our understanding of fundamental biological processes with the hope of translating that knowledge to the clinic in the form of novel therapies for common diseases".

He highlighted the positive outcomes of his basic science discoveries, contributing to the development of new and effective treatments for anemia and kidney cancer. Prof Semenza shared insights into his ongoing research, focusing on the development of novel inhibitors of hypoxia-inducible factors. These inhibitors have shown promising results in animal studies and hold potential for clinical trials in the near future.

During the 1990s, Prof Semenza made groundbreaking strides by identifying molecular machinery that regulates gene activity in response to varying oxygen levels. His discoveries are anticipated to pave the way for innovative treatments in areas such as anemia, cancer, and various other diseases.

The eminent pediatrician was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2019 for his significant contributions to understanding how cells sense and adapt to oxygen availability. The Genome Valley Excellence Award further solidifies Prof Gregg L. Semenza's position as a trailblazer in the field of genetic medicine and underscores the importance of his work in advancing healthcare and life sciences.
